Overview: This program provides all students with the opportunity to study the history, culture and lived experiences of people of African descent in the United States, Africa, the Caribbean, and elsewhere; study the influence of Africa and people of African descent on world and U.S. thought, culture and politics; study the social construction and consequences of race and racism; develop needed critical thinking skills to address the often narrow and Eurocentric bias in the current knowledge base; and examine their personal experiences, prejudices and possible contributions in a multi-racial, multi-cultural society.

Overview: Anthropology provides excellent preparation for advanced academic degrees, such as those obtained in medical school, law school, and graduate school in anthropology and other social sciences. Thinking anthropologically fosters a critical understanding of cultural assumptions, social conventions, information, and even the concept of culture itself. Overview: The Bachelor of Science in Biology provides a broad, robust foundation in the biological sciences. It prepares students for graduate programs in biology (e.g. zoology, botany, conservation biology, microbiology, marine biology, ecology and evolution) as well asprofessional degrees in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacology, or biology careers with industry and government agencies. The program emphasizes the development of critical thinking and communication skills, as well as competency in experimental design, data analysis and methodology for lab and field research. The concentrations allow students to focus coursework according to their interests. A wide range of skill-building opportunities are available to students through undergraduate research, internships, study abroad, service learning, and field courses.
Specializations: It provides four concentrations from which students must choose one concentration: Animal Biology, Ecology and Evolution, Medical Biology, and Plant Biology.

Overview: Biomedical Anthropology is intended to provide students with key concepts in anthropology, health and illness, and human biology. Students will use biological, cultural, and medical anthropology to approach human health from a holistic, cross-cultural perspective. Drawing on the applied focus of the department, the Biomedical Anthropology major is ideal for students who want to apply anthropological perspectives to human health and healthcare systems. The Biomedical Anthropology major provides 1) an understanding of the core anthropological theories and methods used to study human health and illness, 2) an introduction to the basics of biological science, 3) an awareness of social inequalities and how they are manifested in human bodies, 4) an introduction to the ethics of human research, and 5) research, critical thinking, and writing skills that can be used in a wide variety of professional settings and graduate work, including professional school for allied health careers.

Overview: This program is designed to fulfill many of the admissions requirements for professional schools in the health sciences (e.g. medicine, pharmacy, dentistry). Overview: This degree provides a strong foundation in general biology, with an emphasis on biomedical related areas, but focuses on the cellular and molecular processes that occur within cells. Many of the breakthroughs in the field of biology over the past several decades have shed light on how cells function in the context of the whole organism. The fields of genomics and computational biology have begun to solve the mystery of how networks of genes are regulated and how cells interact with each other and the how complex organisms react to their environment. Advances in cell and molecular biology continually lead to new treatments for age-related diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Overview: The Chemistry B.A. gives students exposure to analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry while providing the flexibility to take additional elective courses. Inherent in this program is a high degree of flexibility which permits tailoring a course of study to the students own educational objectives.
Specializations: Biochemistry/Biotechnology - The Biochemistry/Biotechnology concentration offers a unique opportunity for students to pursue later studies and/or professional emphasis in Biochemistry and Biotechnology along with a strong foundation in the chemical knowledge and skills that are essential to these areas.
Career Options: The B.A. degree in Chemistry provides a course of study for students whose careers will require a thorough understanding of chemistry required for a variety of professional activities such as in health-related professions, science teaching, business, law and other areas. Students interested in professional, law, or graduate school or those who anticipate working in careers related to secondary education or business will find this degree attractive. The B.A. student whose goals include graduate study should supplement this curriculum by addition and/or substitution of a selection of advanced courses from the B.S. program.

Overview: The B.S. in chemistry is a rigorous program that supplies the foundation in chemistry required for both the student who begins a chemical vocation immediately upon graduation as well as the one who pursues advanced study in chemistry or related areas. Overview:The Bachelor of Arts in Communication is a liberal arts degree that prepares students to communicate effectively and ethically in personal, professional, and public relationships and in both face-to-face and mediated contexts. More specifically this degree prepares students to:
- Work and lead in culturally-diverse teams and organizations;
- Develop advanced skills and competencies in oral, written, visual, digital, and electronic communication;
- Analyze and create messages, presentations, and persuasive communication strategies;

Overview: The Environmental Chemistry degree enables students to address some of the most difficult challenges the human race will face in the future. Students will develop the skills to understand and investigate the manner in which human activity impacts our air, water and soil and how chemicals introduced by the human race enter the environment.
The degree offers students a wide range of employment opportunities including careers as Clinical laboratory technologists and technicians, chemists, environmental scientists and specialists, and environmental science and protection technicians. Overview:Students take supporting courses in physical and natural science, statistics, policy, and ethics. In addition, students select electives to strengthen their knowledge within their concentration. Seniors complete a research project or work as an intern for a government agency or private company.

Career Options: Students completing the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Environmental Science and Policy have found employment with government agencies (city, county, state, and federal), private industry, and non-profit organizations. Examples of careers include field scientist, research scientist, policy analyst, lobbyist, conservationist, and educator. Some also go on to attend graduate or law school.

Overview: The undergraduate Geography and Geographic Information Systems program offers courses in physical geography, human geography, and geographical analysis. Human geography courses focus on the social and spatial effects of the growth of cities, including issues such as the historical evolution of urban form and function, land-use changes and conflicts, economic restructuring, the growth and decline of inner cities, and urban racial and ethnic relations. Physical geography courses focus on major environmental systems including the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Geographical analysis courses provide skills in geographic information systems science and technology, remote sensing and spatial analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on the human modification of the natural environment and the global interconnections of the major earth systems.

Career Options: Geography and Geographic Information Systems is an interdisciplinary field that offers diverse career opportunities. Geographers work in many different areas, such as environmental management, education, disaster response, city and county planning and community development.

Overview: Geology is one of the broadest of all sciences because of its dependence on fundamentals of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics as applied to the study of the earth. Geologists study landslides, earthquakes, floods, and volcanoes. This program provides the student with a hands-on foundation in the fundamentals of geosciences. A summer field camp is offered for students to learn crucial skills needed by every geologist. Students will be prepared to sit for the state of Florida exam to earn their geologist license.
Specializations: As a result of faculty interests and geographic locations, several geologic sub-disciplines are emphasized, including applied geophysics, coastal geology, geochemistry, geomorphology, geoscience education, hydrogeology, paleobiology, petrology, and volcanology.
Career Options: Geologists work in a variety of settings. These include natural resource companies, environmental consulting companies, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and universities. Many geologists do field work at least part of the time. Others spend their time in laboratories, classrooms or offices.

Overview: The B.A. program is designed primarily for the liberal arts student who has an interest in the subject but who is not preparing for a career in the field, or for the pre-professional school student. Students who elect the B.A. program and decide to pursue the geology profession or attend graduate school will need to take at least physics and field geology.

Overview: This degree focuses on art as a window on to history and social life. In other words, we ask how art creates meaning. Courses are multimedia and interdisciplinary in focus covering a wide range of artistic and cultural artifacts. The Humanities concentration focuses on European art and culture; American Studies focuses on the art and culture of North and South America. Film Studies majors learn to see film as an artistic medium, a cultural expression, a rhetorical device, a technical production and a commercial enterprise. All three concentrations develop analytical, research and writing skills.

The Bachelor of Science in Integrated Public Relations and Advertising prepares students for high-level careers in the fast-growing and quick-changing fields of messaging and persuasion, from agencies to corporations to nonprofits. Overview: The ISS program is designed to provide an interdisciplinary integration of the social sciences for students who are interested in a broad educational experience. Overview: The University of South Florida offers a four year program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology. The first three years are completed on campus; the fourth year (12 months) is completed at one of three affiliated hospitals in Florida, located in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Jacksonville. Admission to the fourth year is limited by the number of openings in affiliated hospitals and, at the present time, is competitive. Selection for the clinical program is made by the hospitals and students not admitted to a clinical program will need to select an alternate degree. Generally, hospitals require a minimum GPA of 2.50 to a 2.75, and our students admitted to clinical programs in recent years have had a mean GPA of 3.4 or higher.

Overview:The undergraduate program in Psychology offers the student a well-rounded liberal arts education.
